Purpose of This Album:
This album, YouFlute, contains play-along versions of all the quartets from our prior album, Mostly Flute, and was created for flutists who seek the enjoyment or experience of ensemble playing but might not have three partners handy to form a live quartet. On this album, each quartet appears twice — once without Flute I and once without Flute II.

Q: Where are the cues in the music?
A: Clicks have been added at the beginning of each movement, and at helpful places within the music, to facilitate playing along with the album. Clicks begin on the downbeat one or two measures before the first full measure of the manuscript. In these “kickoff” cues, there is usually one, sometimes two, clicks per beat. Occasionally, there are solos in the missing flute part, tempo changes, or fermatas that make it difficult to know when to resume playing. Clicks have been added within the quartet movements to cue these resumptions. Listen for these clicks and pencil them into your manuscript for best results.

Q: Where should I place my stereo speakers?
A: If you can, position the stereo speakers sufficiently far apart to separate the flute parts.

Q: Where should I stand while playing?
A: The clicks are cues for the missing flute part. You will hear them from only one speaker. Stand near that speaker.

A: Reverb, also known as concert-hall ambience, has not been added to this album, so that all four flutes, including yours, will receive equal ambience from the room or hall in which you are performing.

Q: Why don’t the clicks (and the music) start immediately?
A: To give you time to pick up your flute after pressing the Play button.

Q: Why are some notes on the recordings different from my sheet music?
A: See Errata FAQ for corrections.

Q:Why do I keep losing my place when I play along with the recordings?
A: There are some places in the music where the "beat" slows down, speeds up, or stops temporarily (rubatos, fermatas, etc.), making it difficult to know when to resume playing. See Infra FAQ for specific places where clicks have been added in the middle of quartet movements to facilitate knowing when to resume after a fermata or a solo in the missing flute part. Also see Tips FAQ for helpful insights about staying "in sync" with the recordings as you play along.
